Threats and Challenges

The grasslands of south-eastern South America, one of the most extensive grassland ecosystems in the Neo-tropics, face significant threats due to human activities. The development of the livestock industry, arable agriculture, and forestry has led to habitat loss, fragmentation, and degradation. These grasslands host a rich avifauna, including 22 globally threatened and near-threatened species, with many others experiencing local extinctions and range reductions.

Threats:

  1. Habitat loss and fragmentation.
  2. Improper use of agrochemicals.
  3. Unfavorable fire management regimes.
  4. Pollution and illegal capture or hunting.
  5. Invasive species.
  6. Unsustainable agricultural practices.

Challenges:

  1. Limited funding and human resources.
  2. Coordination gaps between stakeholders.
  3. Implementation setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  4. Strengthening action plans for the next MOU cycle.
  5. Promoting sustainable grassland management practices.
  6. Enhancing global partnerships to ensure long-term conservation.
