Threats and Challenges
The grasslands of south-eastern South America, one of the most extensive grassland ecosystems in the Neo-tropics, face significant threats due to human activities. The development of the livestock industry, arable agriculture, and forestry has led to habitat loss, fragmentation, and degradation. These grasslands host a rich avifauna, including 22 globally threatened and near-threatened species, with many others experiencing local extinctions and range reductions.
Threats:
- Habitat loss and fragmentation.
- Improper use of agrochemicals.
- Unfavorable fire management regimes.
- Pollution and illegal capture or hunting.
- Invasive species.
- Unsustainable agricultural practices.
Challenges:
- Limited funding and human resources.
- Coordination gaps between stakeholders.
- Implementation setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Strengthening action plans for the next MOU cycle.
- Promoting sustainable grassland management practices.
- Enhancing global partnerships to ensure long-term conservation.
